Inspired by one of my favourite dystopian novels, “Shadows Cast by Stars”, Madda is named after the First Nation’s medicine woman who mentors the young protagonist Cassandra. In the most wonderful of coincidences, years after I discovered this fantastic book I ran into the author Catherine Knutson at a fleece fair on Vancouver Island. As fate would have it, in addition to being a fabulous writer, Catherine is also an indie-yarn dyer and proprietress of The Small Bird Workshop. When I discovered Catherine’s yarn, I instantly fell in love. It was soft, squishy and the colourways were rich and deep while creating amazing stitch definition. The Madda shawl is the result! Madda is an oversized triangle shawl knit with an i-cord edge. Meditative to knit, it is designed to be worn in place of a blanket or a sweater for your trips into the forest or to wrap around yourself when you curl up with your favourite book.
